How to Change the Spark Plugs in Your Car

Spark plugs are an important part of the car as they control the energy that powers your car. They are in charge of igniting the air and fuel. Over time, the spark plugs wear and will need to be replaced to avoid higher fuel consumption, or engine surges and misfires. Premier Car Removals offers the following guide to change your spark plugs.

Firstly, there are a few things you will need:

  • Gap gauge
  • Extension bar
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Socket/ratchet set
  • Torque wrench
  • Swivel Socket
  • Spark plug wire puller

Step 1

Be sure that your engine is nice and cool. Start with removing loose dirt from its engine. Once all loose dirt is removed, blow off all the debris from the ignition coils so that it does not fall into the cylinders. If there is a plastic cover, remove it.

Step 2

Depress or pull off the lock tab to detach the coil electrical connector. Loosen the O-ring seal by twisting the ignition coil. Remove the old spark plug boot assembly. If you are having trouble removing the spark plug boot assembly, then use needle nose pliers to remove.

Step 3

You will also need to remove the dirt and debris that’s settled around the old spark plug. Take your swivel head plug socket and connect it to an extension bar to unscrew the spark plug. Unscrew counter clockwise.

Step 4

Before installing a new spark plug check the spark plug gap with the gap gauge to be sure that you have the right wire gauge between the electrodes.

Step 5

Screw in the new spark plugs with the torque wrench. Look at your car’s owner’s manual for the exact torque setting for the plugs.

Step 6

Before reinstalling the ignition coil, lubricate the boot assembly. Use dielectric silicone compound applying about a pea-sized amount into the spark plug boot. Use the applicator to spread it around. Reinstall the coil, bolt, and electrical connector. Be sure that it “snaps” on. A sign that you have not reinstalled it correctly is that your engine will misfire.

If you are still facing trouble, it is better to sell your old car and upgrade to a newer model. For car owners who are ready to sell their cars, Premier Car Removals Brisbane will buy your old car of any make and condition. Call us for a quote at 0401 960 698.
